Jun: Tekken’s First Middle Aged Women

Ever since Jun Kazama returned to Tekken, many people questioned her age. Some people assumed that Jun was her 22 year old self, the very Jun that appeared in cannon the last time (Tekken 2) while others were certain that this Jun has aged. Well though Tekken Tag 2 has Jun’s age as “unknown”, Harada has came out on Twitter and put her under the category under old women. Judging by his response, he seems to indicated that Jun also has a future in Tekken beyond Tag 2 too. This would make Jun officially, the first middle waged woman to appear in a Tekken game.

When asked in Namco “plan” to have an old woman for Tekken, Harada replied with “Jun Kazama is.” It will be interesting to see if this means that Jun Kazama will be cannonly Unknown too, seeing now that it’s been more or less confirmed that this is the Jun of current state, at least model wise. But we’ll leave that discussion for another day . Anyway here’s the exact quote from his Twitter account:

Jun Kazama is… RT<s>@</s>IamFreakGeek is there any plans to have an OLD WOMAN character for Tekken?

On the Street Fighter side the characters include Guy, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Sakura and Blanka, while on the Tekken roster is joined by Alisa Bosconovitch, Bryan Fury, Christie Monteiro, Jack, Lars Alexandersson and Lei Wulong.

One might question why a handheld device would receive so many exclusive characters, but my guess is that we’ll eventually see all of these characters end up as DLC for the console releases of Street Fighter X Tekken seeing as the news of these characters was accompanied by a reminder that the console versions of SFxT will get new features and DLC over the months.

So, what are your thoughts on this development for Street Fighter X Tekken? Sound off on our forums!

Namco Bandai Holdings has announced the formation of a new development company, officially called Namco Bandai Studio. Consisted of over 1.000 members, including the 80 new developers from the Namco Tales Of Studio absorbed earlier this year, the team will be responsible for the publisher’s key franchises, such as Tekken, Soul Calibur and Tales, as well as other series and the creation of new brands.

The studio will be formed on April 2 in Shinagawa and headed up by Hajime Nakatani, producer on the Tekken series.

In a press release, the company affirmed that merging staff members from different Namco Bandai games into a single software house will help to optimize the work and to encourage developers to enhance their creativity and their attitudes. The studio’s areas of business will include both the planning and development for home, arcade games and network contents.

How will this affect Tekken? With different developers working on the franchise, like for Soul Calibur V, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some drastic changes in a possible next installment.

Tekken Tag 2′s hype and all, but people have been mentioning the lack of in-depth tutorial modes in previous Tekken games to help people get into the competitive aspects of the game. Sure, you could’ve looked at plenty of online guides but what is a better way to get started than read up on an actual game guide produced by the development team of the game itself?

Enter Tag 2 Beginner’s Guide. The Japanese people have had this kind of a thing out for some time now, but it never hurts to localise things overseas as well. It’s got clear, colorful pictures and simple lines of English that are relatively easy to understand. Plus, it’s got the Tekken females giving out pointers. It can’t possibly… suck, now can it?

A Tekken Zaibatsu user lizanias posted scans of the guide book if you’re one of the millions who do not have Tag 2 Arcades near you and share interest in seeing how it has been produced. You can see the post in all of it’s glory here…

… or take a quick look at one of the pages if you don’t have the time to go through the whole thing.

Similar to Tekken 3D: Prime Edition, Harada has agreed for an interview discussing Tekken Tag 2: Unlimited. For those who have been waiting for it, rejoice! For those who have been in need of more TTT2:U news, well, here you have it.

In this interview, the director covers the differences of the first Tag title from the new one, along with the adjustments they did that deviated Tag 2:Unlimited from Tag 2.

Taken from 4gamer.net, an online gaming site from Japan, the interview is written in complete Japanese, but the kind and thoughtful people from Tekken Zaibatsu have considerately translated it for the people who are not familiar with the language.

For more insight on the topic, these links here are all you need. C:

NOTE: The following translation summary was done with the help of Google’s translate and then later re-read with an acquaintance that is proficient with the language. Should you yourself spot any inaccuracies or errors, please post and I’ll amend it. It also somewhat helps If you have previously read the Iwata Asks: Tekken 3DS Prime edition interview to get the ‘picture’ on some bits of the interview.

Translated Summary By Baraka From The Tekken Zaibatsu:

- Harada specifies two significant feedback regarding Vanilla TTT2. First, it’s the “EXCELLENT, best arcade tag ever” type feedback and then there’s the “Please get the console version out much more earlier” feedback since players are finding it difficult to remember movelists, tricks, traps etc of the second character.

- Notes how far we’ve come from the original TTT1 and that such a feature like solo, 1v2 or whatnot didn’t pop up back then because there were plenty enough similar characters.

- With increasing technological prowess and proficiency, the game system itself has grown to a further extent enough to fit this sort of system.

- The complaints that people couldn’t win fights because they had to use a second character which wasn’t as good as their main was a significant inspiration of the new game play modes. If you aren’t as good with a second character, just stick with your main and not be stuck with a second character you don’t play as much. The development team will assure you that you won’t be at a complete disadvantage when you pick solo up against a tag team. With just your one character, you are able to concentrate more.

- Identifies how the transition of character’s play styles from the popular Tekken 3 to Tekken 4 is seen as a contributing factor to Tekken 4′s unpopularity.

- Things are much more easier in solo play too, you don’t have to take big steps in learning Tag assault, when to tag or not etc. Just pick solo play mode as you would normally play say Tekken 6 and when you’re ready to get deeper into the game you can take a step into the tag mode.

- Notes that roughly 70% of “Home” (People waiting on console versions) Tekken players are in the beginner to intermediate levels.

- With solo play, those newer players don’t have to take the time and effort to learn another character, just stick to what you were previously comfortable with. Harada cites a Paul player winning because of the ridiculous damage a Phoenix Smasher does against his opponent and now with the solo play feature he won’t have to give up on that with the new modes.

- There was sometimes situations that moves or positions would often times make a player too good, a notable example Harada used was Tekken 6 vanilla’s original rage settings and that eventually a business and household survey identified that this was not liked because players were finding that beginner and intermediate players were beating better players because of such a system and so they used that feedback in mind to tone it down for Bloodline Rebellion.

- Harada notes that Tekken 6 rage was pretty beastly but it still wasn’t going to let the average player win tournaments because of it. (laughs)

- With the easier access to rage boosts in solo play, players (It mentions that If you are solo and your health is below 30% your attack power is doubled) will feel the exhilaration and thrill of unleashing a strong reversal to the opponent teams, what was a bad thing back in Tekken 6 is being revisited here in Unlimited and somewhat being redone.

Full Translated Interview
- “Unlimited” title came from a translation of the ‘freedom of action’ deal here, the freedom to play how ever you want with who you want. Of course the title is still tentative.

- Solo play for a tag game returned for beginners that wanted to step into the game and allow people to recognize their better characters. “Oh he is soloing as Bryan that’s probably his main.”

- Solo play and Tag team choice is to create a environment in which there is a variety of entry ways. Beginner on your own? Pick solo, do a play through and discover, with a friend? Play a tag team with pair play mode and discuss strategies and learn together. Higher level players will of course be able to learn and adapt with a tag team on their own.

- The shop and all the items players accumulated in vanilla TTT2 will all transfer over to Unlimited. No charge or anything.

-There is half of the team working on expanding the arcade game’s content and the other half working on porting everything to consoles. I believe earlier Murray left a hint on twitter that he was doing work on the console versions. EDIT: HERE.

- He reassures everyone that this system will be balanced and heavily monitored by the team.
